Character Challenge: Character #3

Filed under: Challenges, Creative Writing, Roleplaying Creatively — ShadowsEdge @ 10:04 am

So the character challenge continues - we’ve done a character of our own choice, and Gemini and I have done characters of each other’s choice. For our third out of 5 characters, Moonlight Novelist was kind enough to provide the prompt.

A D&D wizard who has deserted from the military

If you’d like to see the work we’ve already done, we posted an Index with links to the posts. We’ll be keeping the Index updated for you. :-)

The Character Challenge is producing quite a few posts from Gemini and Edge, so we thought we’d index them here for easy access. We’ll update this post as more characters are revealed. If you’ve been doing the challenge on your own, let us know and we’ll include links to your character posts here as well.

Inspiration Tag 3

An inspiration tag is just a phrase or two meant to give you a jumpstart on your creative expression. So read the tag below and interpret it in a creative way. There are no limitations on the medium. In fact we’d love to see a visual or listen to an audio interpretation. Admittedly, some of the tags will lend themselves more to a written format than any other.

So here it is - Tag! You’re It! Have fun!

The glowering storm clouds suited his mood all too well.

Okay, so this tag is a little generic and cliche - show us your creativity and do something different with it! :-)

Here are the previous Inspiration Tags

Character Names - Where do they come from?

Filed under: Creative Writing, Getting Inspired, Roleplaying Creatively — ShadowsEdge @ 10:57 am

Character names come easy for some people - they have lists of names for characters that they haven’t gotten around to using. I’m not that lucky ;-) Character names are hard for me. I’m more likely to have a fully developed character and still be searching for a name. Over the years I’ve found various resources for names - offline I use a Baby Name book. Online, there are several different sites that I have used, but there is one that I keep going back to.

20,000 Names
This site lists thousands of names in many languages and categories. It used to just show the names by their language of origin - now they also have lists of names by category, such as “blood”, “dragon”, “guardian”, “night” and “magical” names. The only probably with this site is that it is NOT a searchable database. You have to search through sometimes long, alphabetical lists. Since I usually don’t have a clue as to what I’m naming a character - it works for me. Often I’ll scan a particular list and a name will jump out at me.

Squid.org Fantasy Name Generator
This site gives you a pull-down list of categories to chose from and generates a list of 25 or so names for you. Unfortunately, it doesn’t give you any information about the names or their origins, nor does it list them in alphabetical order.

Fantasy Name Generator by Stephen Stoddard
This site has a simple interface and an advanced interface. It doesn’t categorize names by origin except in the “Specialized names” option. The simple interface has three drop-down lists each with a “generate list” button. The lists are “Serious names”, “Fun names” and “Specialized names.” Each of the drop-down lists is specific to its title. If you want to try the Advanced interface - which actually looks simpler but isn’t - make sure to read the instruction page first!

Dungeons & Dragons - Character Name Generator
This site hasn’t been updated in awhile, but if you’re looking to name a D&D character, or create a name that sounds like a D&D character this is a simple and quick way to do it.

There are many other name generators and lists on the web. These are just the ones that I find myself coming back to when I need to name a character. Let us know how you come up with character names.

Your Cre8tivity’s First Creative Challenge

Filed under: Creative Writing, Getting Inspired, Roleplaying Creatively — ShadowsEdge @ 12:32 pm

Gemini and I have been discussing a creative challenge. Since we both do a lot of role-playing and writing, we’re always having to come up with new characters that we can use. Sometimes this isn’t the easiest of things to do. We got together and discussed the various things that an author or role-player needs to know about their characters.

Over the next 30 days, Gemini and I will create 5 characters. Each character will be created over a 6 day period, with a specific part of the character being developed each day. You can see our progress over the next 30 days on our personal creative blogs at Shadows Edge and FatCat Compendium.

Here are the areas we’ll be tackling for each character:

  • Physical Description and name
  • Personality
  • Past
  • Enemy/Protagonist/Opposition
  • Current circumstances/situation
  • Miscellaneous - this is for information that is important but doesn’t fit anywhere else.

The first character will be of our own choice. We will post a copy of this post in our blogs and title each of the challenge posts in the following format - “Character Challenge: Character name - #”

Feel free to join us! If you do, sign in and post a link to where your character is posted.
