Three Questions

1. What does quantum physics have to do with creativity?

Since you’re here, I’m going to assume that you already know the answer to question 2. If you’re a new visitor, our thoughts about it can be found in the Why Be Creative? archive. I’m going to attempt to answer questions 1 and 3.

This topic may seem like it’s coming out of the blue, but there was something that inspired me to post about it. This weekend I sat down and watched What the Bleep Do We Know?

If you’ve seen this combination documentary/story you may already have an idea where this post is going. If you haven’t seen it, you’re probably wondering why it has a place here.

What the Bleep Do We Know?

What the Bleep Do We Know?, at its core, is about quantum physics. Sounds dry and boring, right? Wrong. The film manages to communicate the primary theory/belief behind quantum physics in a way that is easy to comprehend. Understanding that, I think makes it clear how quantum physics relates to creativity and how it also relates to your future.So what is that primary theory/belief?

• At any particular moment, every and all possibility exists simultaneously. Only when our attention is directed to one or more of them do they become “real.”

Finding the Path

How many possibilities do most people see in any particular moment? Not many. A lot of people see only one and even that they see only subconsciously.

Why?

Society, culture and education all train us to expect, and therefore see, particular possibilities and outcomes. We all are wearing blinders created by the way we are brought up.

This is where Creativity comes into play.

• People who exercise their creativity are open to more possibilities.
• They are more likely to see multiple possibilities in any moment or situation.
• Creative people are also more likely to act on those possibilities.

Down the Rabbit Hole

This is where things get interesting. What the Bleep Do We Know? takes its base one step further from conventional thinking. Where does that step go?

• If all possibilities exist simultaneously right up until the moment we “see” one, we should be able to choose the possibility that we want to be “real.”

In other words, if we consciously choose a possibility in a particular moment, we can make it happen.

Now we’re in the rabbit hole. According to quantum physics, we can literally choose our futures - but only if we’re creative enough to see outside of the blinders that have been imposed on us by ourselves and society.

That’s a lot of power and a lot of pressure.
We can change the world.
One moment, one choice, one exercise of our creative muscle at a time.
